Mr. Rutherford

Mr. Rutherford, or “Mr. R.” as many of the students like to call him has been with the Celina band program since 1992.  He received his Bachelor of Music Education from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri in 1984.  He completed his Master of Music in trombone performance, with a minor in instrumental conducting under Royce Lumpkin  at the University of North Texas in 1993.

Under the direction of Mr. Rutherford, the program has received many awards, including consistent UIL Sweepstakes, two appearances at the Texas State Marching Contest, TMEA Honor Band state runner-up, two time ATSSB state runner-up and five time ATSSB State winner.

The program includes concert band, marching band, an after school spring jazz ensemble, and various chamber groups.  The Celina Band has appeared in performances throughout Texas and in Colorado and Chicago in the prestigious National Music Adjudicators Festival.  The band has performed with internationally famous musicians Bill Watrous and Allen Vizzutti.

Students of Mr. Rutherford have continued to play in colleges, universities, military bands and professional orchestras around the US, as well as becoming university music faculty.  Among them are Texas A&M, Texas A&M Commerce, Texas Tech, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, OU, Oklahoma State University, University of North Texas, Northwestern State University of Louisiana, University of Miami, Liberty University, University of Arkansas, UCONN, US Army and the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Rutherford resides with his wife, Valarie, and his two daughters, Harmony and Melody.
